Williams Equipment and Controls Company

The company started out as Hawley, Richardson & Williams. After Mr. Hawley died it changed to be Williams and Richardson. Then, when Henry Richardson died and the partnership became Williams, Gritton & Wilde.  The five partners were Gilbert Williams, Dale Wilde, Earl Gritton, Richard C.Williams and Clayton R. Williams.

GWW started Williams Gritton &  Wilde in the Dooly building.  For many years we were there on the second floor 204 Dooly building. This was my dad, my brother Dick, and five partners. Then when we moved to Richards Street because we had a very hard to access warehouse in the basement of the Dooly building. It caused us to want to move so we would have a better access. Also, there was a three-quarter high wall between my dad's office and my brothers office and my office. Which meant that we could hear each other's conversations: on the phone or having a client come in personally to see us. At one point I became tired of listening to the other two voices in the head. I wanted to have my own voice rather than my father's and my brother's voice floating around all day. So I moved upstairs. I had a room closed off from any of the sound on the main floor. My dad's comment to my brother Dick was "I think he doesn't like us."

My dad was offended that I wanted to be separate from him. (Actually it was true that I did want to have a somewhat separate career.) My dad was very proud of the fact that the three of us would walk together at 12 noon to buy lunch together at Keeley's restaurant. My dad was proud to be showing that he had his sons to carry on his wonderful business. And it was a wonderful business that he had created. He had five partners. It did well financially. I am grateful for all that I learned from him. Some of his friends used to call Williams Equipment and Controls and Williams, Gritton & Wilde  "a gold mine." Which is because my dad was a great businessman.

Regarding GWW, due to his Asthma, frequently he would not be able to sleep, lying down, and would love to spend the night sitting up in a rocking chair to ensure to get a nights rest. He needed to be able to spend a full day working at his office or traveling for the company he was a partner in.
