Paris

After my mission, my parents met me in Naples, Italy. We toured around Europe. In Paris, I landed in hospital with an infected toe. My father got a bladder infection. My mother would come to visit us and then she had a ball touring Paris by herself!

When we came into port, my girlfriend, Mary Lois met us. I was quite surprised that Marilyn Covey and her mother were there also. I alternated my time taking Mary Lois out one night and Marilyn out the next (not the mother).

Miscarriage in December

Miscarriage December 15, 1950

Spent the last 3 months of my mission writing a new mission plan for proselyting in Norway. I built the plan around charts and pictures I had developed during my mission and used many ideas from The Anderson Plan which plan had been developed by an Elder Anderson who was laboring in the Northwestern States Mission.  After completing the new mission plan for the Norwegian Mission, President Sherman Gowans asked me to stay an extra 6 months as a missionary serving in the capacity as his counsellor in the mission presidency.  Knowing that my staying an additional 6 month would break my mother’s heart, I counseled with the mission president and he agreed, so he set my release date to be May 1, 1950.  I arranged to meet my parents in Naples, Italy (traveling first from Norway enroute to Naples with an Elder Anderson from the Swedish Mission. Elder Anderson and I travelled from Stockholm, Sweden to Copenhage, Denmark to Frankfurt, Germany……then Elder Anderson left me to catch a ship for home leaving from England and I headed by train to Intelaken Switzerland (skiing at Lauterbrunen or Kleineshedig and then by train from Switzerland to Naples, Italy where I met my parents who had brought me a beautiful new suit and shirts and necktie, so I could look nice in all the fancy places they had reserved for us to stay in throughout Europe during the month of May 1950.

After a wonderful month in Europe with my parents we arrived on June 3,  1950 in New York City and I was met at the dock by Mary Lois Sharp, Marilyn Covey, Louise Covey, and Mrs. Jex. I took Marilyn Covey on a date the night after arrival…….we went to hear and dance to Harry James Orchestra at the Pennsylvania Hotel………the next night I took Mary Lois Sharp out to dinner at the Tavern On The Green in Central Park…..next night I went with my parents to see the Broadway musical “South Pacific”…..next day my parents and I headed for Milwaukee to visit with Uncle Allen and Aunt Grace and their family…….then on to Salt Lake City and home after being gone for almost 3 years……….I dated Marilyn, but no Mary Lois (who was angry that I didn’t ask her out……became engaged to Marilyn who changed the wedding day once or twice….gave her a perfect diamond on the stairway at the cabin in mountains near SLC …….where were Marilyn’s grandparents ..they were not there for the temple weddiing and who asked David O. McKay to seal us…why were Marilyn’s grandparents not a part of the festivities (did they know somethings was awry?)…..a major story was going on with Marilyn when I was on my mission and during the making of wedding plans………honeymooned at Sun Valley for 3 days………….dating and marrying Marilyn was happy, I thought, but there was a major drama which had unfolded and was continuing to unfold surrounding my being courted by Marilyn and all of her family.
