1939
(Age 12-13)Grandpa Williams would take the neighborhood boys to the desert gym for a swim or he would allow us to all sleep on his back lawn many summer nights. He always had a big barrel of peanuts for us to munch on on those summer evenings. We thought it was a lot of fun to ride around the neighborhood on our bikes in the middle of the night. Some of my pals were President Grant’s grandchildren, Truman Madsen, Paul Smith, Gordon Schettler, Paul Christensen.
Willard’s daughter Florence Jacobson was President of Young Women for the Church and his son Paul was a companion of mine in Norway.
My mother and my Aunt Helen Williams were in charge of remodeling Beehive House. They were instruction to restore it back in the olden days. My Aunt Helen had a scrapbook from her mother that contained all of the wallpaper and other materials for them to use as their guide. As my mother and Helen remodeled this important building to look like it did in the time of Brigham Young.
We knew Brigham Young’s granddaughter, a wonderful lady. She lived in an apartment with her husband John Daniel Spencer in the the Vine apartments on First Avenue between State Street and A street.
As far as the church was concerned in my immediate family I grew up in and my three siblings never took an active role in the church. It wasn’t until we moved to B Street that I consistently began attending church. I was the first of the siblings to become active. It had a lot to do with Ralph Hardy; it also had a lot to do with my friends in the 489 B street neighborhood. President Heber J. Grant’s grand children were my playmates in the new neighborhood. These new friends were attending the same schools as I; were with me at church on Sunday. We also were in the anchor patrol in scouting. We played basketball at the ward gymnasium. We spent most of our Saturdays there during basketball season. We also rode bikes, slept out under the stars together. It was nice to walk to church together on Sunday. I should mention one nicest neighbor you could find in that President Grant’s son in law named Willard R. Smith
